UK, Hampton Court, Hampton Court Palace - July 2012 In 1514 Thomas Wolsey, Archbishop of York, began building a large palace complex at Hampton Court. He was a close friend of King Henry VIII (1509-1547) and he provided three suites for the Royal family (the King, Queen Catherine of Aragon and Princess Mary) In 1525 King Henry VIII wanted to divorce Catherine of Aragon as she had not produced a male heir. The Pope would not grant the divorce and in 1528 Wolsey lost the palace to the King. On the south side of the palace is the Privy Garden bounded by semi-circular wrought iron gates by Jean Tijou. The garden was William III's private garden and was replanted in 1992 in a formal geometric pattern in period style.
