Slow Night at the Union FairA number of Maine towns host agricultural fairs annually. These fairs were originally created to promote the exchange of information about practices regarding local horticulture and agriculture. The Union Fair began in 1869 and has been held at the Union Fair Grounds almost every year since then. In addition to the midway with its food concession stands and amusement rides, the fair still offers agricultural displays, information booths and competitions. For one week every year in late summer, the fair features entertainment events ranging from major recording artists to harness racing, fireworks, demolition derbies and a local talent show. On the fair grounds you can find farm animal exhibits, a wine pavilion, an exhibition hall and the Matthew’s Museum which features Maine lifestyle exhibits from the 1800’s. Since 1960, the Union Fair has also played host the Maine Annual Wild Blueberry Festival: a homegrown promotion of everything related to wild Maine blueberries, an important local export.
