Broadleaf Lupine (Lupinus latifolius), Plantae, Carmel, CA, US, Lupine growing on an eroding cliff next to fire road, in a semi-shaded Madrone mixed woodland habitat, at approximate elevation of 2800 feet. Broadleaf Lupine (Lupinus latifolius latifolius) Native, perennial, tall, shade, -loving plant in the Legumes (Fabaceae) family that grows 3-15 dm (up to 59 inches) tall in moist soils in open woodlands or brush. It has large, broad leaves and an open inflorescence where flowers are well spaced along stem. Leaves have 5–11 broad leaflets, 4–10 cm long. Keel is hairy on the upper margin only. Stems are glabrous to puberulent. Peak bloom time: April-July. The larger size of the leaflets and the open inflorescence are the clearest way to distinguish this from Arroyo Lupine (Lupinus succulentus). The other local Monterey County subspecies, L.l.dudleyi, has densely hairy stems. Plants of Monterey County: an Illustrated Field Key, 2nd edition, Matthews and Mitchell, 2015, pp. 165-166. Pea family are plants with "5-petaled flowers that consist of a wide upper banner petal, two wing petals, and two lower petals that are fused to form a boat-shaped keel. Many produce heads or spikes, consisting of multiple individual flowers (examples are lupines and clovers). The seed pod is a Legume, which is a flattened pod, swollen by the seeds, that splits lengthwise along both the top and bottom. Most Lupines have grouped clusters of flowers in spikes, sometimes short, sometimes quite tall. L
