Dubai is the most populous of the states that make up the United Arab Emirates (UAE). More than 90% of the population is expatriate. Like other Trucial States (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trucial_States ), Dubai was a British protectorate. These are states that were completely independent from Great Britain but sought British protection in defence and foreign affairs. A better known British protectorate was Malta. Dubai is investing heavily to become a trade and transport hub for the region. It is also a premier luxury tourist destination. Dubai has the second largest number of 5-star hotels in the world: 61. (London has the most with 75; New York is third with 59; Paris has 56 and Miami 46). Dubai is also a financial and banking centre due to its banking secrecy, tax-free status and deliberately lax supervision. It also has no extradition treaty, making it a money-laundering hub and a haven for people fleeing legal prosecution elsewhere.
