Cardiff, Wales. February 22nd 2021. Allotments have been around for hundreds of years, yet It is the system created in the nineteenth century that we recognise today, when land was handed over to the labouring poor for the provision of food growing, which was desperately needed at the time. The Small Holdings and Allotments Act came into force in 1908, placing a duty on local authorities to provide sufficient allotments, according to demand. A demand that has rapidly increased since the first lockdown in March 2020. As of August 2020, a support package has been designed to increase allotments in areas of Wales, announced by Social Farms & Gardens in August of last year in partnership with the Welsh Government. Over £130, 000 is being invested over the nine months since the announcement to give help to Welsh communities to meet the growing demand for allotments. I had spoken to Pam Ramsay and Amy Vignes (CORR), two friends and neighbours at the Pontcanna Permanent Allotments in Cardiff, pictured here. They had taken on a plot here together in 2009 and have been working on It ever since. ‘It has been really good because Pam and her husband live over the road, and I live on my own. We’ve been friends and neighbours for years now and have been working at the allotment together for over 11 years now. It has been good exercise over the lockdowns - we can have a chat and a walk and some fresh air, so it’s been really good. The allotment has been a god send; it really has.’ – Amy Vignes ‘Really, it’s preparation time at the moment. We’re doing a lot of digging, clearing off and weeding in time for spring. It’s good because we can’t go to the gym at the moment so it’s a perfect exercise. We had even found some potatoes whilst digging over the plot and they’re perfectly edible.’ – Pam Ramsay ‘We took the plot on in 2009 and didn’t have a clue with what we were doing, bit there’s always someone around that can tell you what to do and
