Photo shows Azeri’s who were forced to leave Fizuli, Azerbaijan, during the early fighting between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the disputed area of Nagorno-Karabakh, which has been called “Europe’s longest-running conflict.” Nagorno-Karabakh is an ethnically Armenian area that is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan. The conflict between the mostly Christian Armenians and the Turkic Azerbaijanis became a full scale war in 1991 at the end of the Soviet Union and cooled with the 1994 Russian backed ceasefire. That ceasefire ended in September 2020 with an Azerbaijan military offensive to retake land and villages lost to the Armenians during the 1990’s conflict. On November 10th 2020 Russia brokered another ceasefire after a brutal six week war. According the United Nations the modern 26 year-long conflict has created over 800, 000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDP). Photo shows IDPs, who fled the Azerbaijani town of Fizuli during the 1991-94 conflict and in 1993 were living in a school building in the small village of Akhmedbeili on the Araz River in southeastern Azerbaijan.
