The north main entrance is an imposing gateway, decorated with biblical reliefs and topped by a marble sculpture, leading into Necropolis de Colon or El Cementerio de Cristobal Colon ( the Cemetery of Christopher Columbus) in the Vedado neighbourhood of Havana in Cuba. Havana’s monumental Catholic cemetery founded in 1876, is one of the largest in the world. Some two million people have been buried on the 135-acre site, full of creamy marble, glittering bronze, polished granite, angels, crosses and rich symbolism by 19th and 20th-century artists. It is one of the most important cemeteries in the world, and is held to be the most important in Latin America in historical and architectural terms, second only to La Recoleta in Buenos Aires.
