After the monarch butterfly comes out of it's cocoon, it takes around 2 hours for it's wings to become as large as an adult butterfly and to dry off. Sometimes they will sit still for a long time gaining energy to fly away. This butterfly will head out to an island close to Thunder Bay where the Monarch butterflies gather from this region before beginning the flight south to Mexico. This group will meet up with other groups on their flight south and fly together all the way to Mexico, The butterflies will sometimes ride the wind currents aiding them on their almost 3, 000 mile trek to their wintering grounds in the hills of Mexico. This butterfly will likely just make it the group in time for their long flight. Along their flight path through to Texas, signs are posted along the way encouraging people to plant the flowers these butterflies need for fuel to complete their flights.
