On a sunny July afternoon, D B Cargo’s diesel locomotive no 66067 has just left Rainford junction station and it approaching Birches Occupation Bridge to the west of Rainford station as it travels along the railway line between Wigan and Kirkby. The bridge carries a footpath that comes off Red Delph Lane which starts from just off the Rainford by pass near where the railway crosses it. The train it is hauling is the 05.54 departure from the Wilton in the northeast to the Knowsley refuse transfer depot near Kirkby on Merseyside. The train is carrying empty refuse containers to be reloaded with refuse and waste from the Liverpool area to be burnt in an incinerator on Tyneside.
