In the old days before restaurant cars in trains, Preston Station was an official stop for passengers to get refreshment in the tearoom to break their journey. Trains stopped for half an hour to permit this, but there was often unrest as passengers jostled to get something to eat and drink before the half hour was up. There was a scurrilous rumour that the tea was made too hot to drink in the time & undrunk tea was poured back into urns to be re-sold to the next trainload of passengers. Maybe disposable cups, in which you can take your drink onto the train, aren't so bad!
