Post Mill base, Holland Farm, Papa Westray, Orkney. A post mill is the earliest type of European windmill. The whole of the moving part of the mill is mounted on a single vertical post around which it can rotate to catch the wind. This example has a solid stone base to support the mechanism rather than a round house or trestle. Part of the Traill family estate farm, an extensive, mid 19th century, well organised complex with farmyard and buildings inc. horse-engine house with a conical flagstone roof, threshing house (with horse-gang powered threshing machines), corn-drying kiln, silage clamp, post mill base, and flagstone stile. Holland (houlland) means high land from the Old Norse hó land: given to the principal farm set on the highest part of the agricultural land.
