Passengers unload suitcases and other luggage from cars in a covered airport departures drop-off zone in the United Kingdom. Several vehicles stand beside the terminal kerb with their boots open as travellers prepare for flights, while a large overhead sign directs motorists towards “Departures A drop off zone”. Green road markings, directional arrows and controlled traffic lanes identify the area as a dedicated short-stay passenger unloading point close to the airport terminal. The image has strong editorial relevance following July 2026 research showing a sharp rise in charges for dropping passengers near terminals at the United Kingdom’s busiest airports. Analysis by the RAC found that 16 of the 20 airports examined had increased their so-called kiss-and-fly fees since the previous summer. The average charge rose by £1.70 to approximately £7, representing an increase of about one third. Gatwick and Stansted charged £10 for their closest terminal drop-off facilities, while Edinburgh and Bristol charged £8.50. London City had introduced an £8 charge for five minutes, making it particularly expensive when calculated by the minute. By contrast, many leading airports elsewhere in Europe continued to provide a short free terminal drop-off period. Airport operators argue that forecourt charges help manage congestion, encourage public transport use and reduce vehicle emissions around terminals. Critics regard them as another unavoidable travel expense, particularly for families carrying heavy luggage and people who need assistance. Although airports generally provide free alternatives in more distant car parks, these can require passengers to use a shuttle bus or walk further. The photograph can illustrate airport fees, rising holiday costs, passenger access, parking revenue, consumer affairs, family travel budgets, transport affordability and the growing cost of beginning an overseas journey before reaching the check-in desk.
