Pyracantha, commonly called firethorn, is a dense, spiny shrub in the rose family (Rosaceae) known for its clusters of white spring flowers and bright, showy berries (pomes) in late summer through winter. The fruits range from orange to deep red, depending on the species or cultivar, and are a major food source for birds in colder months. When fruiting, the glossy green foliage contrasts with the heavy berry clusters, making it a striking ornamental hedge or landscape plant. Firethorn is often used as a barrier hedge because of its sharp thorns and dense growth, while its berries add strong seasonal color. Although the fruits are technically edible when cooked, they are very astringent raw and not usually consumed by people.
