Large monochrome mural of Ian Curtis, singer and lyricist of the influential post-punk band Joy Division, dominates the gable wall above a convenience store at 86 Mill Street in Macclesfield, Cheshire. Manchester-based street artist Akse P19 created the portrait from a 1979 photograph by music photographer Kevin Cummins. The completed artwork was formally unveiled on 26 March 2022, with Joy Division co-founder and bass player Peter Hook attending alongside local representatives. Funded by Cheshire East Council, the mural gives one of Macclesfield’s best-known musicians a prominent public memorial in his home town and stands opposite the bus station, visible to residents, visitors and music tourists. This elevated view looks downhill along the busy town-centre street, placing the vast black-and-white portrait within an everyday urban setting of independent shops, signs, vehicles and pedestrians. A barber’s pole and letting boards project from the right-hand buildings, while green Cheshire hills rise beyond the rooftops in bright summer sunshine. The contemplative image of Curtis above the colourful commercial street makes the building a striking cultural landmark on local Joy Division heritage trails. Curtis was born in Stretford in 1956 but grew up and lived in Macclesfield, where he developed strong personal associations and was later buried. Joy Division emerged from the Greater Manchester music scene in the late 1970s, releasing the landmark albums Unknown Pleasures and Closer through Factory Records. Songs including Love Will Tear Us Apart, Atmosphere and Transmission established the group’s enduring international reputation. Following Curtis’s death in May 1980, the remaining members formed New Order. The mural links Macclesfield’s traditional identity as a Cheshire market and former silk town with its internationally recognised place in British post-punk history, attracting fans who visit locations connected with Curtis and the band.
