Basking in the sun. South Africa: THESE IMPESSIVE photos show the lion King Major posing for the camera as he basks in the setting sun until he was rudely interrupted by a taunting bird. King Major can be seen stretching out as he reaches for a pesky bird, with the bird having an extremely close escape.King Major weighs approximately 500 pounds and is nine feet long, with a three-foot-long tail. When standing on their hind legs, African lions like King Major can jump 36 feet high and 12 feet vertically. These images were captured by professional photographer Simon Needham (56) on the GG Conservation in Free State, South Africa, using a Canon R5 camera. The GG conservation names all their male lions as Kings, currently protecting 77 lions from the dangers of poaching. ?It?s rare you see a lion in such a dynamic position so its great to feel like you?ve capture something a little more unique than usual, ? said Simon. ?This all happened so fast, out of the blue the lion lunged at the bird, which just managed to escape the lion?s clutches. ?Sunrise and sunset are typically the best time to photograph lions as this is when they are most active. ?King Major was going about his daily business reviewing the newly burnt grass fire brakes. ?It feels great to be able to bring attention to worthy wildlife sanctuaries through photography and I knew this image would do just that.?The beauty and contrast in these images I feel highlight the elegance of lions in nature. ?It?s always a privilege to spend time in their presence.?
