. French-grown vegetables labelled by origin in a Lyon supermarket produce section. Loose vegetables sit in green produce crates beneath signs prominently stating 'France', making national origin a visible part of supermarket merchandising in Lyon. Country-of-origin labelling is especially important for fresh produce because shoppers may weigh price against seasonality, food miles, farming standards and a desire to support domestic agriculture. French food culture places strong emphasis on provenance, and supermarket displays often turn origin into a selling point alongside freshness and price. The mix of nearly empty crates and remaining vegetables also gives the scene an ordinary end-of-day or recently shopped feel, useful for illustrating real consumer choice rather than an idealised food advertisement. Origin labels make food provenance visible at the point of purchase, allowing shoppers to distinguish French-grown produce from imported alternatives. In fresh vegetables, that information can carry economic, environmental and political weight: consumers may prefer domestic farming, shorter supply chains or produce associated with a particular season, while price and availability still influence the final choice. Empty spaces are equally informative because fruit and vegetable displays change through the trading day as stock is replenished and customers select the best items. French supermarkets often give strong prominence to country of origin, reflecting both regulation and a culture in which farming and food provenance are highly visible public issues. The image can support stories about agricultural policy, food prices, local sourcing, seasonality and the pressure on growers from supermarket competition. It also documents the ordinary retail presentation of fresh produce in Lyon, where national origin, unit price and physical appearance all sit together in the consumer's decision.
