The Complesso Monumentale di Santa Maria Regina Coeli in Naples is a remarkable blend of late Renaissance and opulent Baroque art. Established in 1590 by Augustinian Nuns who converted the former Montalto Palace, it remains a working convent today, currently managed by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Jeanne Antida Thouret since 1812. The Church boasts a single nave and a spectacular, richly carved wooden ceiling with gilt details, hosting paintings by Neapolitan Baroque masters like Massimo Stanzione. Other artworks inside include pieces by Luca Giordano and Micco Spadaro, making it a hidden treasure of Neapolitan art. The high double stairway leads to a portico with frescoes, setting a grand entrance. A key peculiarity is the adjacent Cloister, renovated by Francesco Antonio Picchiatti, a serene space featuring a beautiful 16th-century marble fountain-well. The complex also houses a historic Refectory and a fascinating ancient Pharmacy, which historically served the nearby Ospedale degli Incurabili (Hospital of the Incurables), using medicinal herbs grown on the premises. This continuity of religious and charitable function makes Regina Coeli an exceptional site.
