Seen from the east. The Moot Hall was originally the gatehouse of a 15th century castle on this site. The original abbey was built by Saint Wilfred on land given by Queen Etheldreda in 674. This Abbey Church of St Andrew was burnt by the Danes in 875. It was rebuilt in 1113, when a priory was founded here, though much of the nave was subsequently destroyed by the Scots in 1296 and remained in ruins until rebuilt in 1907. Much of the church is in Early English style of architecture. It is the largest church in Northumberland.
