Closeup image of 400W Osram-GEC MA/V medium pressure mercury lamp seconds after starting. At this point the lamp has not warmed up and so the arc discharge is largely through the argon fill gas only. As the lamp warms the light turns from a blueish colour to greenish white as the mercury vaporises into the arc stream, the arc narrows and the lamp becomes much brighter. MA medium pressure lamps were the first commercially mass produced mercury lamps for general lighting, developed in 1931 by Osram-GEC of England. While their light quality does not deliver the full colour spectrum or warm glow of incandescent lamps, their significant improvements in efficiency made them favourable for applications like factory lighting where lots of bright light was needed. They later saw use for street lighting, though due to the fact that when run horizontally the arc bows upwards (risking breakage of the arc tube) the fixtures they were used in required fitment of a magnetic arc deflector to rectify this problem. One such example of street lighting lantern that was designed with this in mind was the GEC Dioptron. Although smaller wattages of MA lamp were available (such as 250W) the lower wattages gave lower efficiency and were not as successful commercially. To rectify this, the high pressure mercury lamp which uses a similar design was invented in 1936, and owing to increased efficiency and lifetime allowed much smaller wattages to be commercially viable. Despite this, MA lamps continued to be manufactured well into the 1950s in their larger wattages.
