San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, Bermeo Basque Country, Euskadi, Euskaerria, Spain. Gaztelugatxe is a small rocky island on the coast of Bizkaia, which can be reached by crossing a bridge. It is in the lands of Bermeo, to the northwest of that town; however, it is closer to the town of Bakio, four kilometers southwest of the island. The hermitage at the top of the islet is called Gaztelugatxeko Doniene or San Juan Gaztelugatxekoa, and it is an important touristic point of interest in the Basque Country. To get from the bridge to the hermitage, you have to climb 231 steps (other sources mention a higher or lower number). Since 2021, both the chapel and the bridge have been declared cultural assets. According to custom, whoever goes up there must ring the bell three times and ask for a wish. Thus, the effort spent climbing the stairs pays off. It is worth mentioning that the famous Basque folk group Oskorri created a song about this place called Gaztelugatxe.
