Dramatic steam clouds rise from Roaring Mountain. It is a prominent geothermal feature in Yellowstone National Park. Located north of Norris Geyser Basin along the Grand Loop Road, Roaring Mountain is famed for its dense concentration of fumaroles—steam vents formed where superheated groundwater escapes through fractures in the rock. The pale, hydrothermally altered slope is largely barren except for a few scattered conifers clinging to the margins. In the late 19th century, the fumaroles were so loud they could be heard from miles away, earning the site its name. Roaring Mountain offers a stark and powerful glimpse into the immense geothermal energy still pulsing beneath the Yellowstone Caldera.
