‘Sapphire’ is the name popularly given to the deep or rich blue variety of 'Corundum', where as other varieties of sapphire are usually termed ‘yellow sapphire’ or ‘pink sapphire’. Being composed of aluminium oxide like ruby and other sapphires it crystallises in the trigonal system and has a hardness of 9. Its density is generally 4, yet can vary from between 3.90 and 4.1 and its refractive index values are similar to ruby at between 1.760 and 1.774. The mean birefringence value of 0.008 for corundum can vary slightly from 0.008 to 0.009.
