This coaster was blown onto the Bar at Teignmouth as it was heading into port. A strong gust of wind blowing down the River Teign was all that it took to put this vessel into trouble as it was being navigated to its berth by the local pilot. Pilotage is necessary for vessels over 30 metres to navigate this difficult estuary entrance. This is provided by Pilotage and Marine Services Teignmouth Ltd. Local knowledge is essential as both strong currents and surges together with strong wind gusts and a shifting sand bar make it even more challenging for large shipping. This vessel was safely eased out of its predicament and safely berthed within ten minutes. Teignmouth is situated on the north bank of the River Teign and historically has provided safe mooring with a harbor and sheltered estuary moorings. The Teignmouth end of this sand spit is known locally as the 'Back Beach'. In the summer months it houses bright colored beach huts and is busy with pleasure boats. This popular beach which is only a thin strip of sand is a well loved destination for many locals and visitors. Being situated on the estuary side there is always lots to see and the place to catch the small pedestrian ferry across the River Teign estuary to Shaldon. The fishermen use this beach which formerly housed the local boat building company Morgan Giles. Several boat tour operators are based here. Teignmouth, Devon, England.
