The Ashton Memorial was comissioned by Lord Ashton as a tribute to his late wife. Lord Ashton, who was born in Lancaster, became a millionaire producing oil cloth and linoleum which was exported from The Port of Lancaster to destinations all over the world. It serves as a reminder of the importance of Lancaster as a thriving commercial centre, not only in times past but now in the 21st century. The Ashton Memorial has a first floor viewing gallery which provides superb views of the surrounding countryside, across the City of Lancaster towards Morecambe Bay and the Lake District to the north, Blackpool to the south-west and on a clear day you can see the Isle of Man. On the second floor, It houses the Williamson Gallery where a series of exhibitions are held throughout the year and many works of art are for sale. The spectacular stonework of the Memorial reflects the colour of the sun and can be seen in hues from pale yellow through pure white to deep orange depending on the time of day and offers an image of inspiration and contemplation.
