Energy Star logo on the compact fluorescent light bulb package. Household compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL) with the E26 Edison screw base that fit into existing light fixtures are becoming increasingly popular in recent years. Compared to incandescent light bulbs, CFLs are generally several times more efficient and have a longer rated life. Despite the improved efficiency, the actual environmental effect of CFLs is the subject of much debate. CFLs typically use mercury vapor and need to be properly disposed of. The United States Environmental Protection Agency promotes energy efficient consumer products through its Energy Star program. Here a flood-type CFL package sold in the USA by General Electric is shown. Oct 2008.
