Entitled: "New and Improved Self-Acting Earth Closet" advertisement for a toilet, a chair shaped box-like piece of furniture with hinged coverings on the upright back and over the seat; also displays an opening in front revealing a bucket beneath the seat. This system used a metal container as with the pail system, but small amounts of a mixture of peat, dry earth and ashes were used to cover the excreta, removing any smells. The earth closet was popular and was used in private houses, military camps, hospitals and extensively in India. It remained in use well into the 1930s. A toilet is a sanitation fixture used for the storing or disposal of human urine and feces. In developed countries, different forms of porcelain flush toilets are common: seats are used in the West while squat toilets are common in East Asia.
