Port Arthur is a famous Australian heritage area and Tasmania's top tourist attraction. It is located approximately 60 km south east of Hobart, the capital of Tasmania. In 1996 Port Arthur became the scene of the worst mass murder in Australian history. On 28 April 1996, Martin Bryant, a Tasmanian resident, went on a killing spree at Port Arthur. He murdered 35 people and wounded 21 before being captured by Police. This led to a change in the law in Australia to severely restrict private ownership of weapons including shotguns and rifles, a highly popular move in Australia.
