According to Norse mythology (the Heimskringla-"The Chronicle of the Kings of Norway"), the Norse king Harald sent a ship to England under the command of the great warrior Hauk. To Hauk Harald gave his son Hakon. In England, Hauk went to the court of the king, Athelstan. He place the baby prince on the king's knee (pictured here) for the king to bring up the child. Hauk told Athelstan that he could kill Hakon, but the child's death would not rid him of all of Harald's other sons. Custom at the time dictated that who ever fostered a child was not as important as the birth parents. Thus, Hauk succeeded in keeping the two kingdoms from warring with each other.
