Public footpath on the Durham Moors at Sikehead between Stanhope and Blanchland. This particular path leads to the Sikehead reservoir and dam then onward to Rookhope. This is an old lead mining area, two chimneys, remnants of the industrial past, can be seen near Sikehead reservoir (one of the chimneys is visible in the photograph). The hill above the chimney is Bolts Law (540 m) and from its summit views can be had over Rookhope and the pennines to the west and south and over the Derwent Reservoir and Tyneside to the east. The Poet WH Auden described Rookhope as “the most wonderfully desolate of the dales.” He also wrote about visiting the Sikehead chimneys in his youth.
