Ruins of the church tower, built of sandstone, at the penal settlement of Port Arthur in Tasmania. This church was built in about 1836 and was destroyed by fire, leaving only the walls standing, in 1884. Port Arthur was established as a small timber station in 1830. By 1840 it housed over 2000 convicts and civil staff and was a major industrial centre in Tasmania producing a range of essential goods from ships to shoes. The complex finally closed down in 1877 but remained a settlement that was renamed Carnarvon and tourism became an important industry.
