Vast fields of silicified tree trunks lie scattered across multicolored badlands in northeastern Arizona, recording a Late Triassic river system that once supported conifer-dominated forests. During the Late Triassic (~225–205 million years ago), logs were transported by braided streams, rapidly buried in volcanic ash and sediment, and gradually replaced at the cellular level by silica-rich groundwater. The result is petrified wood composed primarily of quartz, often brilliantly colored by trace iron and manganese oxides.
