Robert Edwin Bush and his wife Marjorie converted their home, Bishop's Knoll in Stoke Bishop to a wartime hospital of 100 beds (for Australian Soldiers) at their own expense. The hospital received its first patients from 13th September 1914 and was the only privately owned hospital in the country to receive wounded soldiers directly from the front.
