Photograph by David Coleman. The Apollo 11 Command Module Columbia represents the only portion of the first Moon landing spacecraft to return to Earth. Measuring 10 feet 7 inches (3.23 m) in height and 12 feet 10 inches (3.91 m) in diameter, the vehicle weighed 11, 700 pounds (5, 307 kg) at splashdown. Manufactured by North American Rockwell in Downey, California, Columbia served as the mothership in lunar orbit and safely carried the crew and lunar samples through atmospheric reentry. Following its historic mission, the spacecraft completed a celebratory 50-state tour in 1970-1971 before NASA transferred it to the Smithsonian for permanent preservation and display. The command module's conservation was supported by Gregory D. and Jennifer Walston Johnson. Now a centerpiece of the Destination Moon exhibition, Columbia stands alongside other significant artifacts from the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs, helping tell the story of humanity's first journey to the Moon.
