Chiang Mai, Thailand’s second largest city in northern Thailand, is rated as the world's most polluted city for its very poor air-pollution ahead of Kolkata in India and Dhaka, Bangladesh. The haze or thick smog blocks out the sun and often cause ill-effects to the local population. It has been an ever-growing problem over the past 20 years, that the intensity and duration has become so bad until recently the Thai Government introduced a law, banning in particular local farmers who burn their sugar cane and rice crops from late February until April across northern Thailand, known as the ‘burning season’. Some farmers have chosen to ignore the ban or unaware of the ban. Also forest fires help contribute to the smog as well as a surge in traffic and industrial development. Whilst Thailand is trying hard at controlling pollution, two other surrounding counties, Laos and Myanmar, on Thailand’s northern borders, also contribute to this unhealthy smog but has no law on banning it. This does effect tourism.
