Colorless or white light as perceived by human eye actually consists of many colors or wavelengths of light. Here a compact fluorescent light bulb is photographed through a diffraction grating which causes spatial dispersion or decomposition of light emitted by the light bulb. Note that the image consists of several distinct colors because the light bulb emits several discrete spectral lines. Compared to incandescent light bulbs fluorescent light bulbs are generally several times more efficient. They typically use mercury vapor and need to be properly disposed of.
