The Austens were friendly with the Lefroys who lived here, and Jane was a frequent visitor. The lady of the house, Anne Lefroy seems to have been almost a mother figure for Jane, encouraging her writing and allowing her use of the library. Jane's attachment to a visiting Lefroy nephew from Ireland, Tom, developed during three balls held during the Christmas period of 1795/6 at Deane House, Manydown Park and finally (on Friday 15th January 1796) here at Ashe Rectory. These events (along with a lot of fictional ones) were the subject of a rather naff movie - 'Becoming Jane ' starring Anne Hathaway and James McEvoy in 2007. Anne Lefroy died on Jane Austen's 29th birthday - 16th December 1804 as a result of head injuries sustained when she jumped from her bolting horse just down the road at Overton. She was 55. Jane's brother Charles conducted the funeral on midwinter's day. Remembering Anne four years later, Jane penned a poem in lament.
