Magee, mayor of the city of Pittsburgh . to show therelative effects of periods of prosperity and depression in thePittsburgh District upon railway earnings, and upon othersimilar indices of commercial conditions, such as 1. Bank Clearings, 2. Steel Tonnage, 3. Railroad Freight Tonnage, 4. Telephone Calls, 5. Post Office Receipts. Freight tonnage covers all in and outbound freight handledwithin a district about 40 miles around Pittsburgh, not includingfreight in transit. Similarly, telephone calls are within thesuburban district served. Steel tonnage embraces the output ofall mills around Pittsburgh, as reported by the American Iron &Steel Association. Post office receipts cover most of the sub-urban offices within a radius of 8 miles. No industry escaped the panic of 1908, but the recoveryduring 1909 indicates that the District is rapidly regaining theprosperity which it enjoyed during 1906-7. Note that the postoffice receipts and telephone calls were affected to a much lessextent than bank clearings and steel tonnage.. The number of persons alighting is propor-tional to the area of the circles; number of trans-fers used proportional to area of squares. Di-rection of transfer indicated by arrows.
