Fleetwood's Upper Lighthouse (known as the Pharos Lighthouse) is a 93 feet (29 metres) tall sandstone structure (left background) designed by architect, Decimus Burton, and Captain H.M. Denham in 1839. Completed in 1840, it stands in the middle of s residential street, Pharos Street. It was designed in conjunction with the much shorter, 54 feet or 10 metres tall, Lower Lighthouse or Beach Lighthouse on Fleetwood's sea front (right background). The two lighthouses were designed to be used as a pair to guide ships through the sandbanks of the River Wyre Estuary. The Pharos Light was kept immediately above the Lower Light for safe passage.
