A New Orleans streetcar operator raises the trolley pole at the end of the Canal Street route, Nov. 14, 2015, in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Canal Street line runs from the riverfront to the cemeteries, then stops long enough to allow passengers to embark and disembark while the operator performs the kite switch that allows the streetcar to then travel from the cemeteries back to the riverfront. Streetcars are propelled by onboard motors that use two trolley poles on top of the car to draw power from an overhead wire. The pole at the front of the car is in the lowered position and the pole at the rear is in a raised position until the car changes directions. New Orleans began using streetcars in 1835. There are currently five streetcar lines in New Orleans. (Photo by Carmen K. Sisson/Cloudybright)
