The São Paulo Botanical Garden was founded in 1928 after an invitation made to the Brazilian naturalist Frederico Carlos Hoehne, to implement a botanical project in the Água Funda region, in the city of São Paulo. Before that, the region served as a water supply for Ipiranga (a neighborhood in the city of São Paulo). In that same year, Frederico created the Orquidário de São Paulo, considered the starting point of the garden. However, it was only in 1938, with the creation of the São Paulo Department of Botany, that the space was definitely made official. The site aims to show how important nature is, and increasingly emphasize the care that must be taken with biodiversity, and from this point of view it shelters numerous living beings, such as trees that are at risk of extinction and 139 species of birds. Currently, the site has around 360, 000 square meters, a space that houses 380 different species of trees and animals such as green-billed toucans, sloths and howler monkeys.
