Weitere Informationen:
Housesteads Roman Fort, The toilet block was built up against the south curtain wall beside the south east angle tower at the lowest point of the fort so gravity fed rainwater could be used to flush the waste from the sewer out through a stone conduit under the fort wall. The Latrines were originally cleansed using surface water and drains, but this only worked in periods of wet weather. To increase the supply of water a tank was constructed at the base of the SE interval tower to collect water from the tower roof. Constructed of carefully jointed sandsone slabs sealed with lead caulking it had a capacity of 23, 800 litres. The scalloped wear at the top of the slabs most probably resulted from soldiers washing clothes. the ground floor of the tower was used as a bakehouse so a thick layer of water proof mortar was laid against the tower to damp proof the interior.
