People look at pieces of contact information at the Marriage Market in Shanghais Peoples Square in Shanghai, China, 30 June 2013. The Marriage Market in Shanghais Peoples Square doesnt have an exact name. Many call it Marriage Market, Bride Market or Matchmaking corner. Peoples Square is a huge park, huge even by Shanghai standards. Every Saturday the park turns into a hunting ground. Here people are hunting for an exchange of contact details, an appointment, and marriage for their son or daughter. It takes place every Saturday and Sunday from noon until around five in the evening. Hundreds hang the resumes of their sons or daughters across the park and exchange contact information with parents interested in their childs marriage potential. To the parents it is a very serious matter, who their son or daughter marries, and the seriousness certainly explains their resistance to being filmed or photographed. This is not just some cultural practice to marvel at: it could be the beginning of their son or daughters future happiness.
