The process is completed in about three years, when theremainder of the tooth is cast off or shed. Figure 8 gives an idea of therelation between the age of the child and the process of decalcification. 24 ORAL ROENTGENOLOGY Calcification of the Permanent Teeth. Of the permanent teeth, it isthe six-year molar in which calcification first begins, the cusps havingstarted to calcify at the time of birth. The other teeth foUow corres-pondingly, as illustrated in Figure 9. All the teeth are fully calcifiedbetween the eighteenth and twentieth years. Figure 9.. The formation of the permanentteeth occurs above and below the temporary ones and on the lingual side.They take up part of the space formerly occupied by the roots of thetemporary teeth, but the large crowns, having hardly enough room in thechilds jaws, are pushed way down to the inferior border of the mandible, or high up in the maxilla. This is especially true of the cuspids, the roots ofwhich are almost completely calcified at the time of the tooths eruption.Gradually the crowns of the permanent teeth force their way to thesurface. The first permanent molars erupt about the sixth year, behindthe second temporary molars. Then the crowns of the temporary incisorsare cast off, being succeeded by the permanent ones. The bicuspids takethe place of the temporary molars, which are lost between the tenth andeleventh years. At about the age of twelve, the second molars erupt.The cuspids replace the temporary c
