Camels were introduced to Australia in the 1860s, by pastoralists who brought them in from British India, together with their cameleers from the borderlands of today's Afghanistan and Pakistan. A huge aspect of Broome's tourism industry is the camel. These gentle creatures take guests on soothing rides along Cable Beach through four different camel operators. Broome Camel Safaris, for instance, offers a variety of tours that run between 30 minutes and an hour and allows you to see the beach at different times of the day. The sunset tour lasts an hour and lets you watch the sun fall over the coastal horizon as you sit atop one of these magnificent beasts. All ladies on the tour also get a free pair of pearl earrings made by local jewellery maker, Dahlia Designs. Other operators include Red Sun Camels, Cable Beach Camel Safaris and Ships of the Desert.
