The ancient city of Aizanoi in the Aegean city of Kütahya's Çavdarhisar district is one of the significant places bearing the legacy of Anatolian history. In Turkey's “second Ephesus” Aizanoi one can find the Temple of Zeus, which is the best preserved one in Anatolia, a 20, 000-person capacity amphitheater and 13, 500-person stadium adjacent to it, a Turkish bath decorated with mosaics, streets with columns, five bridges which are still in use today, and the world's first stock exchange building. The city was the center of episcopacy in the Byzantine era. Aizanoi was rediscovered by European travelers in 1824 and studied until the 1840s. Two archaeologists M. Schede and D. Krecker started excavations under the auspices of the German Archaeology Institute in 1926. In 1970, R. Naumann began these studies anew, and they continue to the present day. Most of the structural remains that have survived from Aizanoi, located on both sides of the Kocaçay River (Penkalas), were built during the Roman era.
