The Moeraki Boulders on Koekohe Beach on the Otago coast of New Zealand's South Island. They are a popular tourist attraction for those travelling SH1 through Otago. The boulders have been designated as a protected scientific reserve. Access to them is free but there is a voluntary contributions box. There is a large car park to accomodate visitors as well as a cafe and shop. There is little else and the area remains relatively unspoiled given the throughput of tourist visitors, The boiulders are of an unusual size (over 66% of them being between 1.5 and 2.2 metres in diameter. The boulders consist of mud, fine silt and clay, cemented by calcite. The calcite not only cements the mud and silt but also replaces it in some of the boulders meaning that they vary in hardness and resistance to erosion.
