The National Museum of African Art is a Smithsonian Institution located in Washington DC. The museum is dedicated to the collection, conservation, study, and exhibition of traditional and contemporary African art. It is the only national museum in the United States focused exclusively on African art, making it a unique institution in the American cultural landscape. The museum was founded in 1964 by Warren M. Robbins, a former U.S. Foreign Service officer. It was initially housed in a townhouse, and its collection was initially privately owned. In 1979, it was incorporated into the Smithsonian Institution and relocated to its current location on the National Mall in 1987. The museum's collection encompasses over 12, 000 objects representing nearly every area of the continent of Africa and spanning thousands of years. This includes ancient as well as contemporary art, and the collection is continually expanding. Key aspects of the collection include textiles, sculpture, pottery, jewelry, photography, prints, and video art. The museum also has an active schedule of rotating exhibits, showcasing different aspects of African art and culture. These temporary exhibits complement the museum's permanent collection and offer a focused look at specific artists, themes, or periods. In addition to its exhibits, the National Museum of African Art offers a variety of educational programs. These include lectures, workshops, and film screenings, all aimed at promoting an understanding and appreciation of African art and culture. The museum's library holds over 32, 000 volumes related to African art, making it a significant research resource. The National Museum of African Art plays an important role in enhancing the public's understanding of Africa's rich cultural heritage. Through its collections and programs, the museum seeks to foster a greater appreciation for the diversity and depth of African art, culture, and history.
