Gulliver's Travels is a political social satire written by the English author Jonathan Swift in 1726. Despite the satire, its fairy tale quality has allowed it to become a children's favorite. In this 1902 illustration, the main character Gulliver is with the little people, those who inhabit the land of Lilliput and placing them in chairs of state on his table. They are one-twelfth the size of normal human beings. Gulliver landed on their shores after he was shipwrecked. To protect themselves and to confine him, the Lilliputians tie him down to the ground. Soon, he overcomes their hesitation and in Lilliput becomes a favorite of the court. This illustration, which dates to 1917, shows Gulliver being given food to eat by the people of Lilliput.
