North Greenwich is the largest station on London Underground’s Jubilee Line Extension and could, within its structure, easily accommodate the Canary Wharf tower. It was the first of the Jubilee’s open box stations and is by far the biggest, being 400m long, 30m wide and 25m deep. In was built in the highly contaminated ground of the North Greenwich peninsula. The Jubilee Line Extension is the first tube line on London’s Underground system to have platform edge doors (PEDS) installed at each station. These doors, made of toughened glass, provide a physical barrier between the station and the rail tunnel and open only when a train is standing at a station to allow passengers to enter or leave. The doors improve safety by preventing passengers falling, jumping or being pushed onto the track and the isolation of the station from the tunnels provides for more efficient ventilation, heating and air conditioning. The doors can be opened manually in an emergency or to provide access for maintenance crews. An escalator is a mass transportation device that moves passengers quickly and efficiently up or down between the floors of a structure. In reality, it is a simple moving conveyor but, instead of a belt, it has a series of ingenious steps that are self-levelling, driven by a powerful electric motor and chain system. This is combined with a moving handrail that moves at the same speed as the steps to provide passengers with stability. The really clever thing is that an escalator can never break down, it can only become stairs. The Jubilee Line covers 36.2km (22.5 miles) and serves 27 stations between Stanmore and Stratford. The equivalent statistic for the new extended section is 16km (10 miles) of which 12.4 km (7.7 miles) is in tunnel and 3.5 km (2.3 miles) on the surface. Work started on the £3.5 billion project to extend the Jubilee line in December 1993. The extension runs from Green Park to Stratford and was opened in three phases during 1999
