The church was built circa 1484 by the Russian craftsmen from the city of Pskov. There is an opinion that they belonged to the same group of craftsmen, who erected Annunciation cathedral. First, the church served as the private chapel of the Patriarch of Moscow, but in 17th century it was used by the Russian tsar and his family. Now it serves as a museum of wooden sculptures. Upper Savior's cathedral was used by the tsar family as a private church, now it belongs to the Grand Kremlin Palace complex an is closed to the public.
